The attorney's purpose in calling Jefferson a hog was to make him seem unable to plan out this crime , but that backfired because he was insulting the African american people in general by comparing him to a dirty animal and saying that he has no intelligence like an animal.This effected Ms.Emma because she raised Jefferson and seeing him being compared to a thoughtless/dirty animal like a hog made her very sad. Tante Lou, being an African American and a close friend of Ms.Emma, of course didn't take that statement nicely.In fact it most likely made Tante Lou angry.
This must have really effected Jefferson the most.This was a crime he most likely did not commit and was being called dumb and dirty by the person that was suppose to be defending him. I can only imagine how he felt being put down to the level of a mindless creature and being put on trial by a bunch of white people.When Jefferson asked for corn Ms.Emma refused to give him that because it was like Jefferson was accepting being a hog.She didn't want Jefferson to become what the white people called him in court, she wanted Jefferson to be a man.
